William James Uttley – 1883-1964

William James Uttley was born June 22, 1883 in Elmira. He was the second of seven children and the second son of John Robert Uttley and Catherine (nee Birmingham).

The birth is not found in the Ontario Birth Indexes of the day. The births of his older brothers are not found there either, so the family was consistent at avoiding the registration of births. The date of June 22, 1883 is found in the 1901 Census. There was a birth announcement in the german-language Berliner Journal on July 5, 1883:

Uttley, John   June 24, 1883
The wife of John [R.] Uttley, in Elmira,
    a son

This son was well named for an Uttley. The both names 'William' and 'James' recur back in England and Canada. The 1891 Census lists William as a son of age 7. Ten years later in 1901 the Census includes William J. as a son at age 17.

According to the census of 1901, William J. is employed at fulling, a job at the woollen mills where he was earning $180 per year. His younger brother Robert G. is working as a apprentice boiler maker at the same salary. From his obituary, William was also trained as a Boiler Maker at the Waterloo Woollen Mills.

William disappears from the record in Waterloo and we learn from his obituary that he went to Toronto to work with Inglis and by 1906 he was in Copper Cliff working at the Canadian Copper Company.

Marriage Record

His obituary says that the couple were wed in 1908. Her obituary tells us that they married one year later in 1909. The Ontario Marriage Index doesn't disagree with either because the marriage isn't recorded. The 1908 date is preferable since their first child was born on March 1, 1909.
